Bruce was a lawyer of great distinction graduating from Purdue University and subsequently Ohio State University with JD in Law.  His practice of law spanned fifty years and included The Legal Aid Society, private practice (Campbell, Schwartzwalder, Sanford, and Baseman), Legal director of the Ohio ACLU and the last thirty years as Bar Council for the Columbus Bar Association.  He served on the board of the Open Shelter, and mentored two young men, Shawn Head and Mark Mattlock for over 30 years.
